Steps to a bespoke tailored suit

There is a process to getting yourself a custom suit.

1. Choose a tailor

Choosing a tailor may be the hardest part of the process. The first thing that you need to do is educate yourself so that you can know what you are looking for. For a few days, take a few hours to read up on suits, shirts, shoes and so on. Look at pictures of what all these items should look like if they are custom made. Also understand the process that goes into both bespoke and made to measure suits.

Once you feel that you have enough information, think of people who can give you references to good tailors. Although you can find good tailors online, the best tailors are those that you are referred to. If you don’t have someone to give you a reference, look online and find a few tailors.

Look into their testimonials and how much they charge and then choose the one that you feel is best. When you visit them for the first time, ask to see some of the previous work they have done and some shots of people they have fitted. Make sure that you are comfortable with them because they will touch you to measure you and they will generally be in very close proximity most of the time you are with them. You may be asked to pay a portion of the cost at this point. The tailor uses this money to buy fabric and any other things that he will need to make the suit.

2. Schedule fittings

Agree on when your fittings will be done. The initial one should usually happen on that first visit so long as you have the time. If you are getting bespoke suits, you will agree when you can come in although the best tailors usually come to you either at home or in the office.

3. Choose the fabrics

You need to choose the fabric that your suit will made out of. Think carefully about colors. If you are not sure, you can ask the tailor to refer you to a personal dresser who for a small fee will tell you what kind of colors are good for someone of your skin and hair color, build and so on. You will also need to choose the color of the lining and this needs to be thought about carefully as well. If there are any particular things you want in the suit you should tell the tailor now.

4. Do the final fitting

You may need to go in a few times as your suit is made for alterations but your final fitting is very important. Try on the suit and see how it looks, fits and feels. Walk around and see whether you are comfortable. Also sit down and make sure that the suit feels okay. If you are not happy, your tailor should make the changes that you want. Remember, you can make as many changes as possible – this is what you are paying for. If you are happy, pay the rest of the fee and your suit will be delivered.

As you can see, it isn’t very hard to get a custom suit made. It takes a short time and it will definitely transform the way you look.
